Kindle Paperwhite First Impressions

October 3, 2012

The UPS driver finally dropped off my shiny new Kindle Paperwhite late yesterday. Setup was simple. It recognized my WiFi network immediately, and even knew my Amazon account. All my previously bought books were waiting in the Cloud, ready for downloading. The only real busywork was reestablishing my genre folders so everything is nice and tidy.

I really like the screen, it’s quite a step up from my 1st Gen Kindle. Nice and bright, with good crisp contrast for my aging eyes. The light is mostly even across the page, except for the very bottom of the screen. Evidently, this is “normal.”  (At first I was afraid maybe I had a defective unit.) You get used to it quickly.

The unit itself is much smaller than my old Kindle, 4.5″X6.5″ versus 5.5″X8″, yet the actual screen is slightly larger. Yay for technology! I really like the touch screen versus the old Chicklet keyboard.

The Paperwhite is so light, you really can read with it in one hand. I’m reluctant to buy a cover, because it would probably double the weight. We’ll see.

So far, so good. All in all, thumbs up from this reviewer!

Well it looks really nice, and the brightness contrast doesn’t seem like it would make your eyes tired.

It’s a definite improvement over my 1st-Gen Kindle. The resolution is much higher, which makes the text crisper. Even so, I never got eye strain from reading on my old Kindle, as opposed to my iPad. The iPad is cool, but I can only take reading on it for about 30 minutes before my eyeballs want to pop out of my skull.
